Program too large to fit in memory?

I am running windows 2000. I have started to get messages
in DOS dialouge baxes when I try and open many programs
that say "C:\WINDOWS\*something* Program is too large to
fit in memory". At least I think this is what it say I can
not pause it and it goes by quick. This happens when I try
and open up programs like DivX player 2.1 and winamp. Also
when I try and install something the program never even
starts to install after I click the EXE file. What is
going on?

Oh yeah, with most programs that refuse to run the EXE
file icon becomes the generic windows exe icon. Instead of
being what the program says it should be. Such as a
lightning bolt for winamp. (Thank goodness that internet
explorer is still working)
