Program software won't load from CD-ROM

I am unable to install a program from my CD-ROM drive. When I insert the
disk, the setup program briefly appears on the screen then disappears. The
same thing happens when I find the setup program using My Computer, and
double-clicking on it. The drivers under Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device
Drivers look ok. Under Properties, it say "This device is working properly."
The same thing happens when I put the disk in my DVD-RW drive. The disk is
OK, because it works fine in another computer. I tried running the Microsoft
Autorun Repair Wizard, but it found no problems. Anyone have any ideas?

Can you install anything else from that drive? If not, replace the
drive.

The drive is working ok. I can play DVD movies from it as well as audio CDs.
The program I'm trying to install is a backup program for a Maxtor One-Touch
II USB drive. The docs say it's compatible with Windows XP, and I have
installed it on another computer with no problems. Again, what happens after
I insert the disk is that the Setup program briefly flashes onto the screen,
then disappears. On the other computer, the setup program stays on the screen
and I'm able to load. Frankly, I am stumped...

from there.

Since you know the drive is working and the problem is only with the
Maxtor software, contact Maxtor tech support.

Thanks, BigJim, I tried that and the results are the same: the setup screen
flashes on, then quickly disappears. All the drivers are updated and the disk
works fine on my other computer with Windows XP, so...

Ok, then how about the disk? Are there other files on the CD that you can
try read (documentation etc) ?

Also, is this software intended for WinXP , or it is for win98 or win2000?

Create a folder on your hard drive. Copy the contents of the CD to this
folder. Then double click on the setup.exe in this folder.

Do you have the Maxtor Drive attached to the computer? If not it may be looking for it.

Excellent point since the stalling appears to occur after
setup has been executed.

Yes, the drive is attached to a USB port. Under system/management/disks, the
drive shows up. I already formatted it on the other computer, however on the
computer on which I want to use it, it does not show up under My Computer. If
I plug a memory key into the same USB port, the key shows up as drive G:, but
when I plug in the Maxtor drive, nothing.

Right clicking on My Computer/Manage, brings me to Computer Management.
Under Disk Management, the Maxtor drive is there, but it's not listed under
My Computer.
