program not responding

Not long after we began using Windows XP our Outlook has
been problematic. We can usually read one e-mail then if
we click on delete a message or click on the next e-mail
the program (checking the task box)stops responding, and
we have to "end task." Sometimes it will work a little
better when we reopen Outlook, but often times not. This
also happens occasionly on Word. This lack of response
happens in all employee emails. Can you shed any light on
the problem
