I have recently decided to wipe my hard disk and re- install an oem copy of Windows XP pro on my machine. The machine was running fine before I had done this. I was just removing a lot of old software and time to put a fresh format on my hardisk. The hardware is a P III 500 with 128-mb RAM, 2 HD both WD's a 40 GB C and 20 GB D running on an ASUS P3B-F MB. Has a SB Live card, Adaptec AU2940 SCSI controller with a CD-rw attached to it. A Quantum 3d 16mb PCI video card, using a US Robotics External Courier V everything PnP V-90 modem no junk hardware in this box. I built this box and am a 16-year veteran in servicing PC's and in fact just completed a Microsoft College course in XP Pro implementation and support. Now for no reason I can find Programs take minutes to launch including browser and e-mail when they do launch they may stall or run fine. E-mail may take a very long time or slam down in a minute. This problem happens about 90% of the time not always. Does not matter if rebooted, the machine has been off and is cold or been on for days. I've tried adding more RAM checked the HD's and system board with utils every thing checks out fine. I have not installed many programs on the disk till I could figure out what is going on. I have all the MS patches installed, the latest drivers for my cards and am running NAV 2002 with the latest virus strings. Once a App does launch for the most part it seems to run fine. I have seen P100's load and launch faster than this one but then as I said you can launch sometimes and have the app up in 5 seconds just no rhyme or reason to it at all. PC was running just great before I blew it away and reinstalled. Has anyone seen this problem before? It has got me confused. Thanks for the help, Mark

mark you know perfectly how to tshoot this.

strip the hardware to bare minimum and do the clean
install again.

turn on firewall
get all the updates
install no other software

and see if the issue continues

if it does you substitute the hardware till you find the
cause.

Thanks for the advice I was more looking for information
about buggs in the XP program. I was trying to avoid a
wipe and reinstall of the OS since I had just done that.
I was sure the problem was software and not hardware. A
clean install again took care of all the problems without
tearing the machine apart. Xp has its issues and figured
this might be one of them. Thanks again.
