Program installers not working...

To whom it may concern:

I have a Dell Dimension 2350, and up until recently, everything's been
pretty OK. For the past 2 days or so, whenever I try to install a program,
the installer of certain programs begin to open, and then close immediately.
This seems to happen at random, and it doesn't happen to all of the programs
I attempt to install. All of the programs that this has happened to are
programs I had installed onto my computer previously, then had to un-install
for some reason or other, and each of these programs has worked just fine in
the past. Any idea what may be causing this and how to stop it?

Any help/ advice would be greatly appreciated.
