First I was having problems with Explorer just shutting
down whenever it pleased.... now I don't have that problem
as much but...
When I try to install a program or update, I get an error
message that basically says that the install program needs
to shutdown. Then usually Explorer shuts down after
that. I can't install anything right now...Windows
Updates included. HELP!!

Try a System File Check. Start>Run type: sfc /scannow. Have the
WinXPcd in the cdrom drive.

What am I looking for when I do this?

SCANNOW is a silent, passive experience for you, as there is no direct
feedback as to what is found and repaired. I believe that there may be info
from SCANNOW in some obscure log in XP, not sure; however, SCANNOW is mainly
used as a "medicine" that either fixes the problem, somewhat mysteriously,
or doesn't.
Next step: CHKDSK
After that: Repair Install
