program files do not appear in task bar win xp pro

any program icons, outlook, explorer, win explorer,
windows media, etc. when you minimize them they just
disappear to the left hand side of the screen. a normal
function is to minimize and the program minimizes to the
task bar - it used to work fine but not now.
