Program doesn't see mapped network drive until I view it with explorer first

I've got a small problem using two win xp home computers. Programs like
backup software, synchronisation software and for example outlook don't
find a mapped network drive on the other computer until I view the
drive in explorer. After that everything works fine (until the
computers get disconnected and connected again).

Is there some special windows service I should start?

I do remember turning some services off a long time ago but I can't
find anything that seems related to my problem.

Thanks.

Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab > Advanced Settings >
Automatically search for network folders and printers > tick.

In addition to the other reply, I suggest you try using UNC paths instead of
mapped drives for this purpose. Drive mappings are for the convenience of
people, not computers....you may find things work better with UNC paths.

Since you've listed Outlook, also, you should be aware that accessing a PST
file over a LAN or WAN connection isn't officially supported and can cause
all kinds of problems. Just thought I'd mention that.
