I have a 5 month old Dell with Windows XP Home. I have 5
User Accounts set up, one for each member of the family.

Turned it on the morning of the 21st and it boots up to
the blue Accounts window fine. When I click on the user
name to open that profile, the desktop background
appears, but the desktop icons and the Start bar flash
continually with no further boot progress.

Dell had me delete and re-install the video driver, and
reset the date to a known good configuration. No go. The
next step is an op system reload. I would like to avoid
this.

Any ideas on what this is about?

Thanks,

Michael

I'm uncomfortable with Dell's adviced to change the date. How did you
do that? In BIOS? Suggest you change it back to the real date and time
before doing anything else.

Why did Dell think it was the video driver? Are there any other
symptoms that suggest this?

Doing a re-load of the operating system is very drastic step at this
stage. While it seems to be a "popular" thing to do, and many vendor's
seem to be easy to recommend it for even the slightest problem, it's
very drastic.

Boot up into SAFE mode (press F8 during inital stages of Windows XP boot
up). After it loads (and "m doing this from memory), you should see a
dialog box giving you a chose of working in Safe MOde or using System
Restore. use System Restore. Read about system restore on the screen
and pick a recent restore date.

If this doens't work, you can use the Windows XP CD to boot up and do a
repair. Check that out next.
