profile corrupt/lost

I have a user who lost his profile, now he gets a screen with no icons for
his programs and he cant access anything- what can be done.

I have the same problem, only it (windows/some how) created an new profile
for the user same name only with a dot after it i.e. user (old profile)
user. (new profile). my question is why ?
Craig our work around is to copy then shortcuts, documents etc to the new
profile.

Thanks, I had a problem with ntuser.dat but it worked.
