Product key is what is used to activate the software.
Product ID is the identification number of the software.
 
Product keys usually are 25 digit alpha numeric codes found on the back of CD cases (on yellow or orange stickers) that the software came in. You will need the key to install the software.

Product IDs are generated after installation. Look in the 'About' section of the help menu of the application.

How is product key generated? From local machine or from Microsoft Activation system?
