To make a long story short, I bought a copy of the XP
upgrade, upgraded my computer, and without thinking, lent
it to a friend to do the same......

Now my daughter has just received a computer, and has
updated the windows on it to XP....but the product key
has now been registered twice (the alllowed amount) and
so after 30 days, windows will no longer work without
registering....

Does anyone have a product key...or no anyone who
does....that isnt planning on resitering twice...

Or does anyone know how I can get one??????

Thanks guys,
Kirstifani

Uhhhh........ the allowed amount is one, not two. (ms office allows two
installs). Now that you have given your xp to your friend they should thank
you as theirs is leagal and activated and your is not. You'll have to
purchase a copy/license/key for your daughters computer. And if your friend
is any kind of friend he'll buy his own xp and give your key back so your xp
is leagal again and can be updated and such. You're friend will need to buy
their own xp/license/key. The rule has always been one copy on one computer.
This started at least with win95. XP just now has a way to stop you from
doing this.

Violation of EULA.

Yes, with Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, cash, etc.

You can get a product key by buying a copy of windows xp.
and also i think you can only use one wondows cd per
computer.

Call and make up a story of a crash, they will give you a
new number. You can wait 120 days and they will not have a
record of it.

Dishonest.

For the record, you can use the same Windows CD on a hundred PCs...provided you
have purchased 100 Product Keys from MS, one for each PC.

Yeah right and MS and all the apologists that defend them
are !!! Just because they write a EULA to suit themselves
and you call it dishonest then it's the way it is. Wrong,
MS has been beat too many times cheating for anybody to
buy that. Why don't you go write a program and let them
think it's a good idea, they take your code and put their
name on it in heart beat and dare you to challenge them.
Get a life!!!!!

you can activate your daughters new install by calling microsoft and getting
an activation code. they will confirm with you that you have this serial
number installed only on one machine as per the licensing agreement.
technically the other installations will continue to work as well as the new
one but it is in violation of their license agreement. let your conscious
guide you in making your decision.

Oh, so because there are corporate thieves and robbers in the world it's
ok for me to steal, too?

Get a conscience.

Greetings --

As it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating systems,
it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and copyright
laws, if not technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each
computer on which it is installed. The only way in which WinXP
licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is that
Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft
mechanism, Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more
difficult) the sort of multiple installations you're asking about.

Greetings --

It's pretty lame when someone has to use anyone else's alleged
"misbehavior" to justify their own lack of integrity. Don't you have
the courage to admit that you're nothing but a thief and a liar,
honest only when someone's looking?

Unlike many other queries on this NG regarding multiple activations, this
one's clear-cut. Copyright infringement. You don't have the right to
distribute WinXP to others; that's an exclusive right of the copyright
holder, in this case Microsoft.

This one, there may be a fair-use argument for, if your daughter is a
dependent and living in the same household you are (i.e. the legally-
purchased copy in your possession could be regarded as shared property
amongst the members of your household/family). Even so, it remains in
violation of the EULA. Take that under advisement.
Does anyone have a product key...or no anyone who
does....that isnt planning on resitering twice...

Don't ask that here. This isn't a "warez" group.
