I have an Windows XP Professional upgrade that I used on an older computer.
I want to install XP on a computer for my grand-daughter but cannot find the
product code. for some reason I put the disk in a disk book rather than
keeping the box. I did register the XP when I installed several years ago (I
have moved on to Vista). so, how do I get the product code? patrick

the product key can be
ascertained from the
old computer, since it
is recorded in windows.

Run jellybean.exe (http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml) on the
old PC. After retrieving the code, do a little bit of housekeeping. Keeping
pieces of paper or disk cases is unreliable, as you just found out. Since
you paid a lot of money for your various software licences, it would be well
worth your while to create a software register in an Excel spreadsheet.
Since you already back up your important files to an independent medium (you
do, don't you?), you would have no problem at all retrieving any product
code, no matter how old.

If the old machine is still up and running you could use INNOBATE
Product Key Recovery to recover the Windows XP Product Key.

You can get a copy from Intel's Software download Store, the url is:-
