Product Key

I have a hard drive that uses Windows XP. The disk was running out of space, so I bought a second hard drive. I made the new hard drive the master (C:) and the old hard drive the slave (D:). I partitioned the new hard drive - half is reserved for Windows 98 and the other half is reserved for Windows XP Home Edition. However, I have lost my Product Key to the Windows XP upgrade. I downloaded the Everest software that was recommended on this website and installed it on the C: drive under Windows 98. It will only give me the product key of running operating system but not the operating system (Windows XP) stored on D:. So then I thought I might be able to retrieve the product key from the old disk drive by booting into D:. I disconnected the new hard drive and made the old hard drive the master. But now I can't boot up into Windows XP on the old disk. Is there a way to find the product key on drive D:? Any suggestions as to why I can't boot up on the old disk drive?

Move the jumper on the drive to CS...having it as master, with no slave
drive, is most likely causing your boot problem.

hi there,

you need to now focus on why your old drive is not working. set everything
back up the same way it was before you bought your new hard drive.

if you can get your d drive going you will be able to get your product key
with the Everest software.

i know this is not very a detailed reply, all i can really suggest with the
info you gave.

Download and burn "Ultimate Boot CD" www.snapfiles.com
Its not a bad utility CD to have around.

After you boot from the CD, look for the NTFS reader (I'll assime you
XP drive is NTFS). It should see all drives/partitions. Go to full fil
name {tab key} and look for the XP license information.txt file in th
D:\ root directory. Hit Tab again to view. There you will see th
Product key code
