Trying to install SP2 on a friends PC tells me that she has an invalid
license key! She has bought a genuine XP Pro COA but when I follow the
instructions from the MS web site to change the key using the
Activation Wizard, it tells me that the key I am changing it to is
invalid!

Anyone seen this before?

TIA

cheers,
Len

I hope your friend received an authentic Windows XP CD with that
new Product Key! It is needed in order to perform a "Repair Install".
Having the COA is not enought to solve her problem.

If you are getting the following error message when attempting to update:

Error Message: The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326904&Product=winxp

You'll have to purchase a new "Full Version" of Windows XP Professional
and perform a "Repair Install" using the new Windows XP Pro CD and Product Key
that comes with it. (You cannot simply change the Product Key)

Example of what you need:

With a Genuine XP Pro COA key (which is only for Retail versions), you must
be using a Retail software CD. OEM versions are not compatible with this
key.
