Product key does not work?

I have windows XP and I think I had Outlook 6.0. anyways I went to
microsoft updates and downloaded the update and then it moved to outlook
2003. When it opened up Outlook 2003, it asks me for a product key and I
typed the exact same which I found on the back of my laptop on the
certificate of authority and it says
"You have not entered a valid product key. Please check the product......."
Anyways I tried it in upper and lower case and checked the number like 10
times and it still does not work...now when it opens even excel and
powerpoint it does the same...pls advice
Thank you in advance

I don't believe that there ever was any such version of Outlook, but
that is the version of Outlook Express that's part of WinXP. Two
completely different programs, though.

Are you saying that Microsoft Update installed Outlook 2003 (a
component of the Microsoft Office suite) on your computer? That's
extremely unlikely; that's an expensive program, and it's not likely to
be a free download.

When it opened up Outlook 2003, it asks me for a product key and I
typed the exact same which I found on the back of my laptop on the
certificate of authority and it says
"You have not entered a valid product key. Please check the product......."

That's to be expected. The Product Key affixed to the laptop is the
Product Key for Windows. Naturally, it won't work for Outlook or any
other Office components.

Anyways I tried it in upper and lower case and checked the number like 10
times and it still does not work...now when it opens even excel and
powerpoint it does the same...pls advice

So, enter the Microsoft Office Product Key. It'll be stored on the
packaging of the CD from which the applications were originally installed.

Anyways, Microsoft update updated all versions of Microsoft products - excel,
outlook, powerpoint. Is there any way I can revert back to the older
version. I never really got a Cd for outlook - it just came with my
pc...thank you for the quick response..

Microsoft Update might have installed patches for any existing software
it found on your PC, but it certainly wouldn't have installed a newer
version. Such upgrades are very expensive and are what keep Microsoft
in business; they wouldn't give them away.

Is there any way I can revert back to the older
version.

Uninstall the current version of Office and/or Outlook, and then use
the installation CD for the older version of Office and/or Outlook to
install it.

I never really got a Cd for outlook - it just came with my
pc...

The Office installation CD should have been in the box with the
computer, along with all of the other CDs and documentation, unless it
was only a trial version.
