Processes

Friends,

Sometimes when I install third-party software (iTunes, for example) there
are some PROCESSES on my desktop computer (Windows XP platform) that I would
like to delete.
However there is always this message: "Unable to terminate this process \
Operation could NOT be completed \ Access is denied"

* Short of deleting the application concerned, is there any other way to
remove undesirable processes from my computer ?

Thanks.

As long as it's a process associated with an application and not a
Windows system process you can use:
Autoruns from the MS Windows SysInternals site:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

AutoRuns will allow you to stop a particular application from starting
by removing the checkmark in the box. Note that some applications
may have several entries, for example a process that loads when
boot the PC and processes that run in the background after you have
booted and logged on.

Use with care as you do not want to stop a process from running
unless you are absolutely certain it's associate with the application that
causing your problems. Also AutoRuns only stops the application from
loading and does not delete the application from your PC.

Note: To get additional details on an item in the list you can't
readily identify you may need to highlight the item (right click) and use
the 'Search Online' option to get the details,
especially useful for the more obscure items in the list.

AutoRuns will show/list all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot ...
(the 'Boot Execute' tab),
when you logon (the 'Logon' tab) and other programs that load
(grouped by labeled tabs) for easy viewing.

It also provides the ability to selectively allows you to stop
(use with care) any program that you don't want to load.
You can undo any changes you have made.

There is also a change in the latest version's (v9.36) menu 'Options':
"Autoruns changes the Hide Microsoft Entries to only hide Windows entries"
