Process called "System" - Is it malware?

I just noticed a process running on my Windows 2000 server called "system".
It is not called "System idle process" or "System.exe" or "System.dll" or
anything else, just "system". Is that a legitimate process or malware? It
is using a significant amount of CPU time (approx. 15%).

It is normal to see "system" process running user system user name. If you
try to kill the process tree it you will get a message that you can not
because it is critical to system operation. Using something like Process
Explorer will not show any executable mapped to it. --- Steve

Thanks, I'll find something else to worry about.

Well there is plenty of that to do. I think I read somewhere there is like a
one on two hundred chance the Earth will be hit by an asteroid in the next
fifty years. --- Steve

Hi!

I found one condition in Windows Service that allows an application runs
with system privileges, it can, for example, terminates system processes.

Is this important? Would Microsoft like to know about?

I need some orientation, please.
