Procedures for Installing New NVIDIA Video Driver

S

Sam

I have Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Prof and with a
successful install of SP2. I would like to upgrade my NVIDIA display driver
to the latest version of 61.77.

My display card is a GeForce3 Ti200. At the NVIDIA web site, under the
Driver Installation Hints, it says: "Before installing new drivers, make
sure you uninstall all NVIDA display drivers from the Windows Control Panel
(Add-Remove)."

I am wondering if after removing the existing NVIDIA driver thru the Control
Panel, should I go ahead and install the new NVIDIA driver and then reboot,
or reboot the computer and then install the new driver?? I have some
concern that if I remove the existing NVIDIA driver and reboot, what display
drivers will windows use? If windows use a generic display driver on
bootup, will I need to remove that driver also?? Would very much appreciate
any help, Sam

I have installed about 30 versions of the Nvidia drivers, up to 61.77. I
have never uninstalled the old ones first. I just install the new drivers
and reboot. Never had a problem.

Hi:

If you have a Dell system (or other brands as well), it is recommended to
use Dell's drivers, as I always do.

There are some special and tailored features that OEM made for branded
parts, although the chips are most likely the same.

If you use other drivers and have problems, Dell might not perform the
support.

Since I always use Dell drivers and follow its instructions, so I don't know
for your answer about Dell system.

However, for my other non-Dell system that I use NVIDIA cards, I do
un-install it first, and Windows will prompt me to reboot. After re-boot
and logged onto Windows, the default display setting is generic VGA and
Windows will attempt to find driver, which at this time, I would stop
Windows for finding the driver.

And then, I click the new driver executable file and perform a new
installation.

It might not have any problem if you don't un-install it first. But who
knows, I did encounter some problems before for not following instructions
and I've learned my lesson :)

For my I8600, the VGA is GeForce FXGo5650 with 128MB, and the driver has not
been updated since the second release while other drivers even BIOS have
been updated many times. I guess there is a reason for that and yet I dare
not to download NVIDIA's driver to use :)

JFI.
