probs getting an internet connection on XP Home

I have a salesperson who has brought his Dell laptop to the office (from
home) and up until a couple of weeks ago, he could just plug a network cable
into his laptop and he would have internet access. Our network has a domain
with our firewall acting as our DHCP server. Apparently he took his laptop
home and tried to set up a wireless connection and when he got through, the
wireless connection worked fine, but he could no longer get an internet
connection here at the office. When I first looked at his laptop, the NIC
card had been turned off by the power management software and I had to
reactivate it. However, I doubt if the problem is with the NIC card, since
the laptop is assigned an IP address and I can ping our firewall from the
laptop. Therefore, the only thing I really think is wrong is that there's no
internet access. The firewall is also our gateway, so it would seem that if
the laptop could see the firewall, it would have an internet connection. In
the Connections tab of my Internet Options, I have checked "automatically
detect settings". I've tried leaving the laptop's IP address as dynamic, but
set the DNS servers manually. I've tried assigning a static IP address and
DNS info. Nothing has been changed on the firewall since it was installed
last year. This is just driving me nuts - it seems like it should be so easy.
Anyone have any ideas? Is there any more information I can provide?
