Problems with XP

My present drive, which is a old Maxtor 6G with Windows ME, will not
allow me to download anything to the USB Micro drive attached to my
system. In fact it is so corrupted I can no longer open files or
navigate to my computer anymore.

In an effort to move on, I grabbed one of three 40G hard drives I have
that are the same model and attempted installed Windows XP on it. The
install never completed.

I tried the second drive and managed what I thought was a successful
installation. When hooked up to my system it worked and even allowed
internet access without me having to install anything more. That was a
couple of months ago.(I put the old Maxtor back in because the
important stuff I need is still on it). Last night I tried the 40G so
I could download some important files but I couldn't get it to boot up
thanks to a corrupted file.

So I grabbed the third drive and installed Windows XP on it. This was
successful, except that this time it is set up so that I have to type
in my password, as an administrator, to get to the desktop. (Something
I can't figure out how to undo). But the big problem is that there is
nothing on the desktop except the Recycle Bin. Internet Explorer is on
the start menu, but does not work. (And I really need to download some
important internet files).

I'd appreciate any ideas on how to correct this problem.(Plugging and
unplugging drives into this system is becoming a real pain).

Thanks.

Perform a "Dynamic" XP installation..Simply boot to xp cd,select install xp,
when prompted for a former windows cd,install ME cd,let it verify, remove
ME cd,install XP cd,delete partition(s),create one,let xp format & install
auto..
Do onto a hd w/o important data, you can retrieve ME data after xp is running.

Thanks but I really need to be able to download some very important
files from the internet.

This is where I'm at...

Windows XP will not install correctly on the three identical 40G
drives I have. After getting past some corruption issues by re-
installing WindowsXP on one of those drives and for the first time on
the third, it takes several minutes to reach the desktop and Internet
Explorer will not work on either of them anyway.

My 6Gig drive with WindowsME will not allow me to download to any of
the USB Micro drives. I can't even get to them because when I attempt
to open "My Computer" (or any desktop folder for that matter) I get a
pop-up that says, "Explorer has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL". My
cursor will not work in "Safe Mode", so that knocks out a lot of
repair options.

And lastly the 160Gig SATA drive I used to have plugged into the
motherboard via a SATA to IDE adaptor (before it "died") is working
again. Albeit via a SATA to USB adaptor. But I can't boot from it
even if I disconnect all other drives, and when I navigate to it in
"My Computer" using one of the 40Gig drives as the "C" drive, I still
can't open Internet Explorer (which used to work when using the SATA
to IDE adaptor).

I'm desperate to find a solution.

Thanks.
