My Friend has just upgraded to win xp home from win 98 and is experiencing a
problem connecting his adsl modem.
He has a very old system that is limited in resources being only AMD-K3 350
mhz processor with 128mb RAM, he also has a 40gb HDD of which there is 32 MB
free.
His system works fine until he tries to install the software for his Intel
anypoint modem.
1. He plugs the modem into one of the four USB ports that are in his USB 2.0
pci card > all fittings are correct ie filters are attached to all phone
points
2. Windows recognises the new hardware and installs the software for the
Intel anypoint modem.
3. When the software is installed, the BT connect screen appears and asks
him if he would like to install IE6 and win Media player 9 to which he says
no (because xp has IE6 SP1 and media player 8.0 already installed.
4. When he clicks to install, the modem light turns solid Green and the
screen and mouse freezes, the only way to get it back is to reboot via the
on switch.
BT Tech support, although they tried very hard to help us resolve the
situation could not find a fix and passed on the problem to Intel, the
makers of the modem.
They said that the problem lie with the upgrade from 98 to XP but they were
not more specific. I cannot see that this should be so as I upgraded from 98
to XP (albeit I have a far better spec machine) and my adsl modem installed
without a problem.
Intel suggested that he reverts back to win 98 and then install the modem
and connection software but this would mean that he has to format and then
reinstall 98, would this resolve the problem? Why is the software not
installing correctly on the XP upgraded machine and what could possibly be
the problem?
Please if anyone has a fix for this, I would be very grateful.
