Problems with XP SP2 & USB(I think)

The other day I ran microsoft update on my
wife's compaq presario running XP Home, this installed a bunch of updates
including SP2. After the update the HP DJ 9650 printer and Epson
Perfection scanner do not work, both these devices are connected to USB
ports, and both work when connected to another computer.

Symptoms:
All documents show up in the print spooler, and indicate "printing" but
do
not go anywhere. Services shows that the print spooler is running.

The PC correctly recognizes when the printer is connected or turned
off by indicating "off-line" or "ready", plug and play recognizes and
installs the printer correctly when it is plugged in after deleting the
printer.

The top document in the spooler cannot be deleted, except by net stop
spooler/deleting the file from \system\spooler\ and restarting the
spooler.

The scanner driver will not install, it errors out with "the I/O
operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit of an
application request"

I have tried without success:
Removing the printer and re-installing it.
Deleting the printer driver and re-installing it.
Deleting the scanner driver and re-installing it.
Uninstalling and Reinstalling all the USB controllers.
Using the compaq app recovery utility to return the intel chipset drivers
to factory settings
Returning to an OS Restore point prior to the updates.

I spent an 1.5 hours on the phone with microsoft and a lot more time in
the MS KB trying a bunch of things, but without resolution.

So far MS technical support , although they tried hard has been unable to
help. HP desktop chat, after a few cursory checks sent me to the printer
group chat, who after a few cursory checks sent me back to the desktop
group chat.

Can anyone else help?

Assuming you only installed critical updates, and not driver updates, visit
HP and Epsom sites for updated drivers

Tried that, no luck.

I have a theory that the updates installed new USB drivers that are the
source of the problem.
