Problems with WinXP Backup Utility

This is the utility that must be installed from
the WinXP disc and is not part of the default
installation.
Can somebody tell me why, when I want
to save the backup to a file, the file option is
greyed out? All I seem to have is the ability
to save the file to a floppy, not to the hard
drive.
Help much appreciated.
Thanks.

I agree with everything that's been said. I have burner software and I
knew the floppy would not hold enough data. The question is: Why won't
the utility let me simply pick a folder and let me write a file to
it????

If you want to backup to your hard drive, try downloading a free program
called"Erunt" it is better than the xp version, and you can also download a
program to help with your registery, just type in erunt in the address bar.
Good hunting

Thank you. I think this has become just a challenge
to find out why you can't write to a file with the XP Backup.
I will keep Erunt in mind, however.

Frank:
First of all, I really don't think the Erunt program will meet your backup
needs. Erunt is a registry backup program and while it may prove useful
under certain circumstances, it's simply not designed to function as a basic
backup system.

The built-in XP backup program is really nothing more than a crippled
version of what a basic backup system should be. It can meet the needs of
some users but it's just not a comprehensive backup program.

In your case the question is - what precisely are your needs in maintaining
a "backup system"? If you're really just interested in backing up data files
that you've created, then you might consider one of the USB flash (jump,
thumb, memory, etc.) drives that have become so popular over the past few
years. Their simplicity of use and general effectiveness in backing up data
files may meet your day-to-day needs. As you probably know they're now
available in multi-gigabyte capacities and their costs have dropped
precipitously over the past few months.

On the other hand you may be interested in a more comprehensive backup
system. In that case you might want to take a look at the many backup
programs on the market.

And finally, if you're interested in backing up your entire system
encompassing the entire contents of your working HD, you may want to
investigate a disk imaging program such as Symantec's Norton Ghost or
Acronis True Image, or other similar type programs. These programs are not
particularly difficult to use and are quite effective in their results.

Click on the browse button and you can browse to whatever drives and folders
your computer can see. The file option is greyed out because it is the only
option you have available. If you had a tape drive installed you could pick
between tape or file.
