Hello to all,
I am helping a friend fix his desktop running Windows XP.
Unit is an XP 1.8 Intel Celeron, 256mb ram.
His son installed many internet programs including Kazaa.
The machine has several problems that I cannot fix...
1. I cannot remove Kazaa - it tells me that the following
module is missing: cd_clint.dll
2. On start-up when when Windos loads and the Desktop
appears, we get an error that following module is
missing/canot load: program files\newdot~1.dll
3. I tried updating Windows XP but when I try to install
service pack 1, and when it tells me to restart after
installing, we get two errors...
first...
tfswctrl.exe fails to close
then...
emkmoh32. exe fails to close
When we restart, service pack 1 has not installed
4. intermittently, we get a message that smsc.exe has a
problem and cannot start.
I want to avoid reinstalling the system.
5. When we tried to update to ie6.0, we get an error that
certain software has not passed the MS Logo test and will
not be installed. Very curious since we are loading off
the MS Update Website.
I suspect Kazaa is at the root of these problems.
This HP computer did not come with recovery disks. The
hard drive is partinioned and the HP restore is located on
a 5 GB partition but Windows XP won't let me see what's in
the partition - I was hoping to overwrite the above files
which may have been corrupted.
Also, I installed Norton Systemworks 2003 and fixed
activeX and registry problems, but still have the above
problems.
I ran AdAware 6.0 to clean up and delete all the spyware,
malware and dataminers. Computer runs faster and no pop-
ups
I ran MSconfig abd shut down all the "junk" in systray
I defragged the harddrive after uninstalling a lot of crap
software.
Any help on the above is appreciated.
Thanks in adavance.
Regards,
Pete C
