Problems with VPN on windows server 2003 network

Hello every one.... I am having problems accessing resources connecting
a PPTP VPN (virtual privet network connection); Couple of things are
happening. My network tree is as follow.
External wan internet
Router
¦
¦
Server 2003 SP1(192.164.124._ from router)
¦
¦
Switch (192.168.0._ IP assignment from server)
¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦
Wireless Desktops (1,2,3) and printer
Router
+
Laptops (192.231.1._ from wireless router)

1)
I connect to a remote location through the internet using my laptop
(win xp home) PPTP connects ok. But as soon as the connection is made,
my laptop looses connection to the network resources (printer and to
the network drive located on the server). I am able to connect to
resources on the VPN host computer (running win 2000 pro). If I
disconnect from the VPN connection everything on my network works
again. The remote computer assigns me an IP (192.178.123.11) the set up
in the remote pc allows only 2 computers (192.178.123.10 and 11). I
don't know if this is OK?

2)
I connect the server to the remote location (win 2000 pro PC) and the
connection happens but I can not brows for any of the resources on the
win 2000 pro because the server can not see the remote location. I
tried to find this PC by using its name "Cat" and two IPs
(192.178.123.10 assign by VPN connection)-(192.178.123.4 the IP given
by the router connected to this 2k pro PC at its location). I think
that this is do to a firewall but I am new to server 2003 OS so I
don't know how to change the firewall settings.
NOTE: The laptop is able to see the host PC using the methods described
(the name and the IPs)

What I am trying to do is connect and share the win 2000 pro (remote
PC) hard drive. One of my programs needs to read and right data from
it. I want to map this drive on the server and then share it on the
network.
Can somebody help me?
Is there a better way to do this?
IF IS POSSIBLE, I don't want to use the server as a host for the VPN
connection for security reasons.

Sounds like routing issue. posting the results of both server and client routing table here may help.

Thank you very much for helping me out, I am reading the information
from the links that you suggested, and I think that it is quite
helpful.

But I have another problem and this is as follow.

This is a different problem that the one listed above

I have setup a little network lab at my house to learn about Windows
server 2003 and what it can do and not do.
I am so stuck with this VPN that makes me wonder why isn't a little
easier. =) I have been researching for 2 and a half weeks and I have
not jet get it right

Let me tell you what I have and have done so far:

I installed Microsoft windows server 2003 on a computer with 2 NICs,
and update to SP1

I renamed the NICs to "WAN-internet" and "LAN" (this is for
reference proposes)

I connected the "LAN" NIC to a switch, and the "Wan-internet"
NIC to a router that is at the same time connected to my cable modem
and the Internet.

NOTE: I configured the router to direct the necessary ports and the
necessary protocols to the server's IP witch is 192.178.123.- - - I
am using a DNS service to find my network over the internet so that
part is all set.

What I did on the SERVER 2003 is:

I click on the ------add or remove a role---- on the "manage your
server" wizard and follow the wizard selecting the server as the only
domain controller and first server.

The domain Name is flash.local

The wizard installed using the default set up -Remote access/ VPN
server

-Domain controller (Active directory)

-DNS server

-DHCP server

I added -File server and I am sharing an entire hard drive
I went into the DHCP server and change the Scope Lease duration to
"Unlimited"
I added a user in the "Manage users and computers in active directory"
and I change the user's settings to -allow access-- in the
"Dial-in" tab

I have read many tutorials and follow their instructions but I am still
unable to access the VPN services
I have a laptop connected to the server throw the switch, this laptop
connects to the internet and brows pages and all; I even mapped a net
work drive (server: share).

I have a Desktop PC connected to the router that connects to the
internet, and that is the pc that I am trying to use to connect to the
server by VPN, this desktop connects to other PCs (windows 2000 pro and
XP pro)

I am going nuts; can some one help me with this? What else do I need to
do to connect using VPN?

Please consider that I am new to windows server 2003 and that I have no
idea of what is up.
Thank you so much.....
