Hi there,
Had a nightmare trying to upgrade ME to Windows 2000 Pro.
I tried both the recommended install (i.e., replaces OS
only) and the clean install (i.e., replaces OS and all
preferences and programs) and had difficulty dealing with
both. After recommended installation, I was unable to
reinstall my applications, specifically, Norton Antivirus
2003; even after reinstalling the OS twice. Doing a clean
install caused by computer to create 2 partition OS
rather than one, meaning I had both ME and WIN2000 Pro on
my system.

Are there any solutions to these issues? I'm very upset
as I bought the software at a retailer that will not
provide a refund to software that is already used, unless
it is defective. Please tell me I didn't pay over $500
CAN for something that won't work on my machine.

P.S. My OS was preinstalled with my IBM NetVista system.
Is there an issue with my IBM machine and upgrading OS?

Thanks in advance for your help.

First, ME cannot be "upgraded" with Windows 2000. It's a newer OS. It would appear that you have two OS' and not necessarily on 2
partitions. They could both be on C: and that will cause problems also if you use both OS' on the same partition. Although it is
for removing Windows 98 from a dual boot, this link: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=285480 can help you to remove the boot to
ME. At some point, you'll want to remove the ME system files. Or you consider a truly clean install where you format the drive in
setup and start from scratch.

You didn't mention any details of the problem. For the NAV problem you may
need to post to the symantec site. There is no supported upgrade path from
WinME to Windows 2000. To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000
install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four install disks can be created
from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the
CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and
follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Check the hardware and or pc manufacturer's web site for the latest Windows
2000 drivers for your devices.
