david

Hi ive recently just installed windows xp after a format.
Ive dowloaded all of the windows updates and have a
firewall and virus checker enabled. Yet i keep getting
this problem when I hit ctrl alt delete. The window pops
up then goes into the taskbar. Yet ive ran a full system
check and spybot yet they have not been able to get rid
of the problem. Ive found people online with similar
problems yet they seem a bit more complicated then i
would have hoped. If anyones got a simple solution or a
toll they can suggest to me for it that would be well
apreciated.

ps sorry if its the wrong kind of forum :P:P

Greetings:

To enable the Taskmanager:
In Start\Run\gpedit.msc\User Settings\Management Templates\System\
ctrl+alt+del Options\Remove Taskmanager\set to Not Configured.

It's strange the Taskmanager being disabled after a format, do you have any
other process disabled?... some times it's the registry editor and or
the group editor along with de Taskmanager. See if any other group
directives are
configured in gpedit... if there are more, it's posible a bug may be in your
system you simply have just not found it.

It's recommended you install Spybot and Ad-aware, not one or the other...

Ad-aware

Also HijackThis will find trojans other programs do not find..

Install a good anti-trojan like "The Cleaner" from

Online anti-virus are usually more efficient than a regular anti-virus.

David,

Is Task Manager still running, or does it close out completely? If the latter, you have a virus. Likely one of the following:

W32.Klez

W32.Yaha

W32.Spybot.Worm

For additional help see www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Create Emergency Copies of Critical XP System Utilities. This small VB Program will create backup, usable copies of Task Manger, Regedit and MSConfig (named Taskmgr1.exe, Regedit.com and MSConfig1.exe) in a new folder C:\EmergencyUtil. Many virus programs will intercept these programs, based on their original file name. The modified file names, allow them to be run. Open Windows Explorer to C:\EmergencyUtil and double click the application you need. The next revision will allow you to browse for the folder you want to place the backups in.

Additionally, see the Win XP Utilities section for Startup Programs Tracker. This small utility scans your system for startup programs and running processes. It also allows you to create a log file that can be copied and pasted into a newsgroup post. The contents of the program window are also copied to the Windows Clipboard, automatically. For replies to newsgroup posts, do NOT include the Running Services, unless its absolutely necessary.
