Problems with sound inporting VHS video

I have been happily importing analogue video from my VHS player into movie
maker for some time with little problem. However, I now have major? problems
with the sound. Whatever source I use, I get no sound, either while
importing or playing back. I'm fairly certain that the audio imput source
used to come up as "usb emp device" but that now seems to have disappeared.

I have no problems importing video footage, just with sound. I'm really
hoping that somebody out there in movie maker land can come up with some
suggestions.

Thanks for reading the post.

MM rarely works well with usb, so you have been lucky in the past. Have you
recently made any changes to your pc, installed any updates like SP3 etc? If
so, use system restore to go back and it may then work.

-- Thanks for the reply Graham, I should have given more information. I haven't upgraded ar downloaded any new software lately. I'm running winXP Pro, sp3, AMD Sempron Processor 3000+, 1GB Ram, video processor ATI Radeon Graphics Procesor AGP (0x4153).

Do you have any idea what "emp usb device" actually means? I would be
interested to find out and then maybe I could reinstall or otherwise correct
the problem. I can't find it using windows search.

emp usb device
Would relate to a usb connected device, so can you say how the vcr is
connected to the pc?

The vcr is connected by phono plugs (red, white and yellow) via a video
capture device and through to a usb2 connection. I don't know if there's any
way to test if the capture device is working correctly re sound output. I do
know I have sound output from the vcr, because it was tested before purchase.

I would suggest using the programme that came with your usb device to
capture, then edit in MM.

I appreciate your response Graham, unfortunately the capture device came as
stand alone, no program with it. Is there any way that you know of to test
the sound output from the device?

No, sorry. I suspect though it is fine, just need to find a compatible app
to work with it.
What make is the device?
Did it come with instructions?

The make is "Tevion" which I believe is made by Medion and it was purchased
from Aldi. It come with no instructions other than a picture of how the
connections are made. It is similar (if not identical) to the "Dazzle"
capture device.

I'm afraid I can't find any mention of such a unit on medions site or the
web by googling.

My last suggestion would be to try downloading some trial software, which as
you say the unit looks like a dazzle, then maybe try pinnacle's studio
first.
