problems with shutdown

Sometimes, randomly, after i click 'shut down', a couple different programs
will cause the shut down to hang, and then winxp home will try to manually
shut them down. i have this problem with "explorer" "NAV" and "sys tray".
why are they hanging and how do i fix it?

This edit automatically ends tasks and timeouts that prevent programs from
shutting down and clears the Paging File on Exit.
