problems with second sata drive and Vista

Hi, I have just fitted a second SATA 160 gig hard drive to my Win XP Home PC.
It was recognized and I formatted it with NTFS which went ok. I also have a
USB 160 gig HD connected. The problem is that I tried to install Vista beta2
onto the new hdd, but the installation failed (after about an hour) with an
error message something like could not find disk. After I got back to XP I
reformated the new drive and now the system won't restart, it hangs at the
XP screen (with the progress bar) and never gets any further. If I hold down
the power button to switch off, then switch it on again it goes to the menu
screen from which I select "Start windows normally" and it boots fine. But if
I try to restart it from Shut down/restart ,it hangs. If I disconnect the new
drive everything is ok, and with the new drive connected it starts normally
from "switch on" but not from "Restart"
The new disk is a Maxtor 160gig sata
My original disk is a Maxtor 160gig sata
I don't know if this is relevant but my original installation XP is on drive
I. I have not had a C drive since haveing some work done at a local computer
shop, but this has never been a problem before.
