Problems with SCVHOST.COM

I am having problems with an Asus computer that is running Windows
2000 Pro. At random times, it goes to a black screen and reboots. This
happens under different conditions.

Most of the time it is when I am using Internet Explorer and change to
a new web page. Other times it happens when I am searching for a file
on drive C:>

Every boot up indicates that program scvhost.com did not load, and is
making an error message. It reboted when I was looking for the error
message file.

Is their some way I can use to reinstall only that program and related
programs. Another computer running W2k is not having any problems at
all, and every thing is working just fine. I experence no reboots, no
problems, so I feel that the scvhost.com program is at fault on this
computer.

Thanks for the help past, current, and future.

Thanks for that information. Now to find out what program or hardware
I am putting on the W2k computers that find and load the missing file.
The other W2k computers run just fine, and have the scvhost.com
program on them.

Hmmmm???? I thought svchost.exe belonged to Win2k.
I have 3 copies running, ALWAYS, as soon as I boot.
I'm having connection problems. Can only get 3 nntp
sessions active before I start getting socket errors.
Could these multiple copies of svchost be related to this problem??

Yes, svchost.exe does belong to Win2K (and NT and XP), svchost.com does not!
Multiple 'copies' of svchost is perfectly normal. The program is used to
'host' services which are run from DLLs, as a DLL cannot execute directly.
Each 'copy' of svchost.exe plays host to one or more services. To see what
each 'copy' is hosting, open regedit, and look at: -
HK_LM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Svchost
On my PC, I have four groups, and hence four copies of svchost.exe running.

Oops! I didn't see the ".com" on the original msg. I was just
zeroing in on "svchost". I was lookiing for ANYTHING which could
possibly be related ot my problem.

From what you say, the 3 svchost processes I have running can each
host one of the NNTP sessions I'm concerned about. I can only get
3 NNTP sessions running at once and there are only 3 svchost processes
running. VERY coincidental. ;-)

So, how can I get more of them running, so they can host
umpteen-jillion sessions at once??

Not quite the right idea. Each copy of svchost plays as a server for a
number of services. Look at the registry key I pointed you at, and you will
get some idea of what each svchost instance is providing.
For instance, on my PC at the moment, I have three instances running: -
BITS group - Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
netsvcs - For a range of net, logon, routing etc services
wugroup - For automatic download and installation of Windows Update.

Have a look at
http://www.ss64.com/ntsyntax/services.html for a better description.

I'm not even certain that NNTP is provided by svchost, so yes, it might be
coincidence that you can only have three sessions open, and there are three
svchost instances.
