Problems with renaming files in FP 2003

B

Bobby

I have a website with over 200 htm files, a few of which are in subfolders.
When I try to either rename a file or move one into another folder I find
that some pages do not get updated with the new file name or path.
While the main folder with most of the files may have all the links correct,
the sub folders just don't get the new links right.
I am sure I am following the procedure correctly (from folder few I right
click and either "rename" or "cut & paste" depending on what operation I am
trying to perform).
Is this a know bug? Is there a fix for it?

Any insight is much appreciated

"Always" make sure you have your web open in FrontPage when renaming or
moving files, and don't use Windows Explorer to do it.

Hi Steve and thanks for your reply.

I do have the web open in Front Page.
I do not try to rename the file or move the file with Windows Explorer.
I am working totally within FrontPage, following the procedures that
normally work.
file - open site - right click on file name - rename - (then I get the
window indicating how many pages have links to this one asking if I'd like
to update these pages so that the hyperlinks will not be broken) - yes.
Unfortunately some of the pages, and I repeat SOME ONLY do not get updated.
Which pages? The pages in the subfolders!
For example, I have a folder named "food" in the main folder where most of
the pages are.
The pages in the "food" folder do not get updated when I rename a file in
the main folder, so the link to the renamed file does not work.
This same exact problem happens when I try to move files from one folder to
another.
I have tried moving the files (by right clicking in FP and choosing "cut"
and then "paste") one at a time as well as all at once, but they just don't
get updated correctly.
Note that I make sure that I do not have any files open in FP at the time, I
am only in "folder view".
I have found in other operations such as substituting text that you need to
save the files if they happen to have been open in FP at the time of the
operation.

My ultimate goal here is to duplicate the site in another language, placing
all the files in another folder (which in turn has its own sub-folders) and
renaming them.
I do not wish to have copies of all the images on the server (otherwise I
could simply copy everything into a new folder, but still would not be able
to rename them), I want the new pages to point at the same images already
present.

Any suggestions?

FP should be renaming the links unless
- you have the pages open in code view
- you are using DWTs on a FP SE server
- your links are in scripts

Always check after any moves in View Hyperlinks or View Reports Broken Links

Hi Stefan,

As I mentioned in my last post I DO NOT have any files open when I perform
the operation (nothing in "code view" etc., just folder view open).
I am not using a FP server, it's strictly linux. In any event this happens
locally on my computer.
My links are not in script, just good old fashioned "a href" hyperlinks.
I asked some colleagues of mine to try it out as well and they had the same
problem.
Apparently FrontPage (they are using the Italian version while I am using
the English version) just doesn't update the pages in folders other than
that which the file was renamed.
Give it a try yourself.
Create a 2 page website with one page in the primary folder and a second
page in a subfolder (a folder in the primary folder), both of which link to
each other.
Then rename the first page in the primary folder, close FP and open the 2nd
page in Windows Explorer and try clicking on the link back to the page in
the primary folder and let me know if you succeed.

I do this often - my folder structure goes 2 levels deep, and renaming
a file in ANY folder will change the links in ALL pages that link to
it, no matter where in the web structure they are located.
This happens in both server based, and disc based webs.
