problems with oe and ie6 after installing xp pro

i recently installed xp pro. during installation i had to disable the ACPI
by pressing F7. this then allowed me to install after i tried it twice. i
then was trying to update to xp service pack 2. that is when i noticed my
ie6 and oe didn't work. ie6 doesn't connect to the internet it keeps
displaying the 'Page cannot be displayed' but i'm running mozilla and that
works. i tried uninstalling ie6 and that didn't work. i then tried the
suggestions from article 318378. This seemed to work but when i rebooted it
said did i want to keep the settings for ie6 and oe and i said yes because i
need the emails on my oe. (is there a way to find them and my address book
to save them to install later if i get oe working again?) then i tried to
download and install from microsoft and it starts to work but then it gets to
the part where it is looking for sites to download from and it says something
is wrong with my proxy settings. so i guess i feel stuck as to what to do
next.

as for the calculator when i try to open it it says the
c:windows\system32\csrss.exe application cannot be run in win32 mode

thanks for any help

Q--

To repair what may be wrongwith some of the files in IE/OE you might try SFC
(System File Checker) with some success. Then if you still can't find your
address book follow the instructions on Kelly's site here:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_a.htm Scroll to "Address Book".

Instructions to Run System File Checker--put up your run box and type in
"sfc /scannow" without quotes and have your XP CD ready because it will
probably be required. You may have to hit retry to move the progress bar
and go to eventvwr.msc in run box>system to see if it ran successfully.

As to restoring the calc:

Line #344 Right: Restore calc.exe

Hi,
(is there a way to find them and my address book to save them to
install later if i get oe working again?)

Outlook express files have the .dbx extension. You can search for
them. The default location is C:\Documents and
Settings\Username\Application
Data\Identities\LongGUID\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Copy the mailboxes and your Address book located in C:\Documents and
Settings\Username\Application Data\Address Book.

To setup IE - Go to Tools - Internet Options - Connections - LAN
Settings and uncheck the ’automatically detect proxy’. Make sure there
is nothing in the proxy box. Do you run a hardware Firewall/Router?

Cheers,

Lara

Search your hard drive for Inbox.dbx
(If you are using Win2K or WinXP you will have to set the Search to include
hidden files and folders.)

If you find two copies, use OE's File | Import | Messages | Microsoft
Outlook Express 6 and choose to import from an OE6 store directory. Browse
to the folder holding the older Inbox.dbx.
