Problems with Nvidia driver update

Joe Yohn

I ran Windows Update recently and noticed that there was a
new Nvidia driver available in the Drivers section. So I
added that to the updates to be installed. (I have an old
Riva TNT2) Ever since then, I've had nothing but
problems. The bar at the top of my windows, which is
normally blue, occasionally now stops updating and instead
mirrors whatever is behind it. When this happens, it
happens to every window and I have to reboot to fix it.
My display properties sometimes say they can't be
updated. Just now when I tried to get into the display
properties, I recieved an error message saying that the
display driver I have installed is for a previous version
of Windows (I'm using 2000 server -- it's a machine at my
office).

I reboot and all the problems go away. For a while. But
I'm going to have to download a driver from Nvidia to fix
this. Just thought I'd warn people about this problem.

I have had nothing but problems downloading drivers from
the WU site. Go to Nvidia and get the proper drivers.

I have almost the same problem (with XP though). Card is GeForce
Ti4200.
Had it working for a year with Nvidia drivers. About week after last
Windows Update wierd things started to happen (though it maybe that it
was the first time I rebooted PC after that windows update). Parts of
the screen stopped painting properly (previos windows didn't
disappear). Day of Defeat started to hang.
So I tried many things: uninstalling driver, re-installing latest
version of Nvidia, uninstalling again, re-installing 1yr old version
of Nvidia - it got worse. I can boot to safe mode no problem but when
booting to normal mode it takes 10 min untile reaches Windows desktop
(feels like hardware/interrupt problem) [PC is 1.7Ghz Intel). I boot
to safe mode, uninstall driver. Do Nvidia cleanup (uninstall leaves
lots of files in windows directory) using Driver Cleaner for
Nvidia/ATI (DC2Setup_26.zip), boot to normal mode, install 1yr old
Nvidia, reboot - still no go (10 min to load, not reacting to mouse
click, etc). Do the clean up again in safe mode, boot to normal mode,
go to MS Windows Update, load MS Nvidia driver (6 Oct 2003 version) -
12Mb thank you very much! Install, screen flickers like new driver is
in effect but when I go to desktop/display properties it says this
driver was written for previous version of Windows and can not be
used, default VGA driver will be used (thanks #$%^&*()P{_
Microsoft!!!). So far haven't found a solution. I keep working with
standard VGA driver (which is great - supports 1280x resolution) but
can't play games as it doesn't support OpenGL (it's kind of waste of
money having this card with this driver).

I'll keep fighting ...
