problems with 'locked with editing' feature

I had received a secure download from a friend of mine. It was a document
that was sent to me to be proof read. She had locked it for editing
apparently. Now all of my Microsoft programs show 'locked for editing'.
(even when I open a blank document.)
How do I clear this function out? I have never locked a document for
editing myself and have no idea how to clear that function.
Thanks for any information!

It's probably just a coincidence that you opened your friend's document
and now everything is locked for editing. It's more likely that either
you have a trial version of Office 2003 and the trial period has ended,
or that you have not activated your Office software.

What happens if you start Word and click on Help | Activate Product? If
you are already activated, a dialog box saying so will appear. If you
are not activated, the Activation Wizard will start. If you have an
expired trial version, a dialog box will prompt you to enter a valid
product key or convert (purchase a key) online.
