Problems with local publish

B

Burger23

I have have reinstalled FP2003 and can not publish. I am
using IIS to self-host my small webpage. The web location
is c:\inetpub\wwwroot. Frontpage extensions are installed.
WHen I try to publish to FRONTPAGE OR SHAREPOINT SERVICES
I am asked for a http:// location. I enter my web address.
I get an error message "Unable to Open" followed by 4
possible reasons: FP extensions not installed (they are
installed) , web server temporarily out of service (it is
working fine), proxy setting incorrect, and error may have
occured in web server.

I also tried the bottom choice to publish, File System,
The folder c:\\inetpub\wwwroot is contained by a server-
based website. To access this site you must use the
http:// url for the web server.

Previously I have had this set up working just fine-- but,
after a reformat, I can not rememeber the correct
settings!!!!

Thanks in adfvance for any help.

You need to enter either http://localhost or http://127.0.0.1 or
http://machinename, not your web address as the publishing location.

You are doing this on your local pc, correct?

Just out of curiousity, why are you creating a disk based web on your local
machine, then publishing it to your own local machine, instead of creating
the server based web to begin with? Why the extra step and hassle?

Thanks for replying....
As soon as I read your post I said, "Yes, that is it". I
changed the Remote Server Type to http://localhost
But, alias, that did not solve the problem. Same error
message as described above.

I know the server extensions are installed becasue the
webpage, with it's hit counter, is working fine. I just
can't access it via FP!!

Any more ideas?

Thanks for responding...
If I understand your question correctly, you want to know
why I go through the publish process instead of just using
FP to create and store a webpage at C:\inetpub\root.

2 reasons: I may move webpage to a cheap web hosting
service if it looks like I am getting too many
hits. Therefore I want to make sure that I understand the
publish process. And secondly, I have a built in backup (I
create a store webpage on Drive D, a second hardrive on my
pc.)

If I misread your question, please rephrase. I am always
looking for new ideas.

Thanks so much

Try open the site in IE, then File Menu | Edit in FP

Pro, correct, then open IIS MMC and right click on the specific web and see
if the extensions have been applied/configured.

Extensions have been applied-- I figure that IIS must be
set up correctly because the web page itself displays, web
cam updates, page counter works, etc on IE 6.x.

But to answer your specific question, Server Extnsions
have authoring box is checked, and Use bult-in selected in
Version Control.

Ok, when you right click on the web in IIS MMC, what options do you have
under All Tasks?

Thanks for replying- I have 4 choices:
Check Server Extensions, Open with frontpage, recalculate
web , and remove server extensions.

Did you try Check Server Extensions and Recalculate Web?

Yes--- both processes just completed successfully.

This is so odd-- Just to repeat, I am entering http://localhost to publish to Frontpage or SharePoint Services (the top choice) and I get the unable to open error message.

Do you have any firewall applications installed and running that might block
FP from accessing port 80?

Good question- but my router has port 80 forwarded to 192.168.1.xxx, my pc.

Also, please remember, that the webpage [www.gradygroup.com], with its web components (hit counter), are working just fine- including a live stream of a webcam

So I think the IIS portion is working. But FP2003 does want to publish to http://localhost

Also, I have uninstalled and reinstlled FP as well as doing a repair install on WindowsXP- nothing helps!

Have you tried using http://192.168.1.xxx
