Problems with installation of other software

I have a Dell Dimension 4600C desktop installed with
Windows xp home edition. I have problems with installing
or running of some commercial software. The message I am
getting is always " 16 bit Windows Subsystem -
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS & Microsoft Windows
applications" I cannot run SimCity software and also
cannot install my Lexmark printer today. I sincerely
hope somebody can help me with this.

Note that there is a trojan that can mess with autoexec.nt. Check for
that too. See this link:
