Problems with images in MS Powerpoint 2007

This morning when I opened a Powerpoint presentation I had been working on
most images in my presentation that were originally maps now are a blend of
several colors. I don't really know how to explain it, but the images are
completely destroyed and you can't tell what the image was supposed to be.
The image looks like a mess of multi-colored confetti. You can tell where
text on the image originally was, but it is now a blurred mess. I'm guessing
this must be a powerpoint problem because the same thing happens with every
powerpoint presentation I open on this computer. I also tried emailing the
presentation to someone and opening it on another computer and the same thing
happens.

Has anyone ever encountered this problem or does anyone know what it is or
how to fix it? Please let me know if you can help.

Thank you

It sounds as though image compression has gone wildly wrong. Some questions:

How did the images get into PPT in the first place (EXACT steps, please)?

All images were from the internet. Some images I did a Ctrl+Alt+Prnt Scrn
and pasted the image to a slide. I then made the images smaller to fit the
slide. Other images I opened in Paint and cropped before adding to MS
PowerPoint. I saved those images as jpeg's first then imported to the slides.
It seems that both ways I did this the image ended up looking like a crazy
colorful mess.
Did you by any chance copy/paste images from one slide to another within the
same presentation or insert the same image multiple times from the same file?

No to both of these questions.
Did you make the images small on the slides then later (after saving,
especially) enlarge them again?

Yes, I made all images smaller, but not after saving. I did not enlarge them
again after I made them smaller.
