Problems with ICF and VOI.

I'm running XP Pro with ICF and Norton Personal Firewall enabled. Until
recently everything was working fine with this same setup, but after
swapping my hard drive and reinstalling everything, I can no longer use the
voice conversation feature while ICF is enabled. With only NPF enabled it
works fine. I've opened the following TCP ports in ICF: 1863, 5060, 1503,
6891-6900. 3389 is already opened for Remote Desktop. Any ideas would be
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Greetings,

Voice conversations use ports 5004 through 65535 UDP and Messenger *should* automatically
open the necessary ports in the ICF on its own. Unfortunately in some circumstances this
functionality doesn't work, there are some solutions that have managed to get it working
again in the past, but they haven't had a big success rate in the past.

Since you already do have the NPF, I would simply suggest turning off the ICF for the time
being and just leaving the NPF to be your firewall.

Thanks for the reply. Generally I just turn off the ICF for voice
conversations, but I like to keep it on so NPF doesn't bombard me with
alerts from port scans. If I just use NPF I have to turn the alerts off,
and I like to be aware of what is accessing the net. Do you think I might
be able to restore functionality by installing SP2b, or is this more likely
a configuration issue that would still remain or a bad install?

Hi BarCom,

To be honest, installing the beta will probably solve the problem, but after uninstalling it,
the problem will probably come back (although more than likely by that time the final release
will be out). It's worth a try!

Thanks. I'll take another look at it and see if I want to test drive it or
just wait for the release.
