Problems with Epson 3170 and USB 2

I purchased a Epson 3170 scanner this morning. The installation went well,
but when I try to use the scanning software I seem to be getting random
lockups, just as I am attempting to scan and I have to reset the computer
(CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't work).

My PC only cam equipped with USB 1.1 posts, so I bought a 3rd party 4 port
USB 2 PCI card to use with the Epson. Although the card installed with no
problems (Windows picked it up and automatically installed the supplied
drivers) my 3170 plain refuses to work with it.

However, when using the scanner on my old USB 1 ports everything works fine.
Slow, but fine!

Can someone point me in the right direction to fixing this problem please?

PC Specs:

Intel P4 2.6ghz
1024 meg RAM
80 gig H/D
Windows XP Pro
Epson 3170 Scanner.
USB 2 card is a VIA model.

The VIA USB 2 chipset requires the USB 2.0 update from Microsoft. You must
have Windows XP SP1 installed. SP1=Service Pack 1.

There is a conflict with the manufactures driver and Windows XP.

Thanks for the info. I presume this update is easy enough to find on the MS
site?

No luck with the update unfortunately.

I try to launch the update file ( Q822603_XPE_SP2_X86_ENU.EXE ) and about
halfway through is fails with the error message; "QFE Installer Error -
WEUpdate cannot retrieve information needed for setup from database. Setup
cannot continue."

I have no idea what that means!

I just got an Epson 3170, primarily to scan medium format negatives. I
am using Windows MEwith all the updates, and a 3rd party USB-2
card in an Athalon machine. I have had no problem with this
scanner.
While no speed demon, the scans are proportionally no slower than a
dedicated negative scanner I have on another computer, a Window XP
box. While the unit can scan at 3200 ppi, I saw no discerable
difference from scans I did at 1200. A 6x6 cm negative at 3200 give
a huge file...ca. 45MB in Tiff. At 1200 it is about 6 Megs.

You should goto www.viaarena.com and get the latest dirver for you USB
2.0 card.
I've heard that VIA USB 2.0 chips are a problem. Try to get a USB 2.0
Card with a NEC chipset.
