problems with encoding

I use Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6 and have just downloaded the classic
version of Windows Live Hotmail. However, every time I now go into hotmail I
have to change the encoding setting, from Unicode (UTF-8) to Western European
(Windows) in order to be able to read the pages properly. Ticking Auto select
makes no difference. I also have to do this when I move from one folder to
the next. Any ideas?
