I've screwed up my contacts. OE 2003 with sp1 and all updates. single
user not on exchange.

I have set up my contacts to be "contacts", then "A", "B", "C" etc
under contacts. Contacts has no entries.

1. When I switch to contacts, I get contacts. Which is the lowest
folder, not "A", which is the one I want to open.

2. When in mail, I click on the to line, I get "X", a different folder
then any in in the contact view, when I click on "show names from
the:" entry I get "outlook address book" then indented "X", "B", "C",
"Y", "Z", Contacts, and then un-dented "personal address book". X, Y
and Z shouldn't be there.

I can't add any items to "X", which I don't want anyway.

to recap, what I want is "A", "B", "C" etc. with "A" coming up as the
default in both mail and contacts.

H E L P ! !

Bring up the Properties dialog for each contacts folder. On the ones that
you want to appear in the address book, check the box on the Outlook Address
Book tab. On the ones that you don't want to appear, clear that box.

Then, choose Tools | Address Book, then Tools | Options. In that dialog, you
can choose A as the address list you want to show first.

Sue:
Sorry to take so long to get back to you.

Everything works, except that when I choose "my contacts" window, the
folder
that automatically opens is the "CONTACTS" the physically last on the
list, not
"GENERAL CONTACTS", the physically first on the list. I think that
"CONTACTS"
is the folder and "GENERAL CONTACTS" is one of the sub folders.

The second thing is all the "extra" subfolders that only show up in
drop down boxes, and
how do I get rid of them?

Thanks
LES UNGERLEIDER

Outlook 2003 doesn't provide any way to show a particular contact folder
when you first access the Contacts navigation pane. It will always show the
Contacts folder in the user's default information store.

I don't understand where you're seeing these drop-down boxes.

Sue:

When I open a new mail, click on TO, get a box titled
'select names', click on 'show names from the:' a list
pops up. The correct list is highlighted in this list, but
see note for when 'CONTACTS' is selected.

Hope this helps, I have blank contacts, with a structure
under it, with multiple subfolders

Sorry, but I still don't get what the issue in the address book (i.e. the
dialog titled Select Names) is.

Just remove any invalid references to Contacts Folders here:
Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or address
books > Outlook Address Book > Change.

Thanks Russ -- that did it, now for the orignal problem.

This is the part I can't follow.
Use the Folder List view (not the Contacts view) to see your true hierarchy,
then explain why it isn't what you want and what you want it to be instead.

I'll try again!

Opened file/folders/new folder/ and I get a dialog box
that when I expand contacts shows:
Contacts
010 General Contacts
010 General Contacts1 (in bold)
020 Lyn's Contacts
033 Lesu2000
99 hold
99hold1
Deleted Items

All the sub folders are ones I added. I want to delete
(and thought I did) '010 General Contacts', and '99 hold'.

When I am in 'contacts' function, the folder that opens
is "CONTACTS", which has no entries. The one I want
is "010 General Contacts1", which is physically the first
in the list. CONTACTS has been moved to the last in
the list.

Hope this helps

Please use Folder List view.
Do all these subfolders appear there as you've listed them?
If so, just delete the ones you no longer want.

Yes, I copied exactly.

Only area of folder list not grayed out is Create New folder, does not
have a delete function available.

LES UNGERLEIDER

What you describe is inexplicable.
The only Contacts Folder you can't delete is the default. You can't have
more than one default and all subfolders can be deleted.

When I check with tools/e-mail accounts... I only see the subfolders I
want, when I run file/folders/... I see the extra folders. Still the
problem is that when I open the contact tab, it shows CONTACTS, not
the subfolder I want it to show. I can live with the 'extra'
subfolders, since they don't seem to show up anywhere else.

If it was easy, I wouldn't need the help and advice from multiple
folks. I've used MS products since day one and have been in IT for
over 40 years. It seems such a simple little problem (vbg)!

Nope -- goes back to CONTACTS I think it is because CONTACTS
is the higher level, and 010contacts is the lower level.

Now can I have it the way I want it, or must I copy to CONTACTS?
