Problems with Asus K8V-X and 160GB S-ATA Drive

Hello everybody!
I have massive problems with my new Asus K8V-X mainboard and a new 160GB
S-ATA harddisk from Western Digital (WD1600JD-22HBB0). I want to use one
S-ATA harddisk at the onboard VIA VT8237 Raidcontroller. It seems that I
only could use the first 137GB of the harddisk at this controller, because
the system hangs when I want to read or write to an area behind the first
137GB.
I have made one primary partition up to 70GB and installed WinXP SP2 with
the newest drivers on it. The second partition is about 60GB and is ok, what
means that I could read, write and format it without any problems. But if I
create a new partition in the last unused harddisk area the system will hang
by the format process. This is not a windows specific problem because by
formating the last partition under a linux live-CD the system will also
hang. The second problem is the restart after such an error: After a normal
restart by pushing the resetbutton is not enough for the Bios to find my
harddisk again. The error message is "Hardware Initiate failed. Check your
device, press <g> to resume." Only after switching off the power supply the
harddisk will be found again.
I think that the BIOS of the VT 8237 Raidcontroller is not able to use
harddisks larger than 137GB. But the motherboard is new, so could that be
possible? I use the newest Systembios V2.54. The Bios of the Controller is
V2.01. Is it possible to update the Controllerbios? I have not found any
information about that at the asus or the via homepage. Where can I find
some specifications of this raidcontroller especially of the max. useable
diskspace? Do you think this could be a problem of the harddisk? But it is
also new and when I create a partition it is "error free". So I wanted to
use the Datalife Tools for DOS from the Western Digital homepage to check
my drive but booting with such a Caldera-DOS startup disk fails in a system
hang. Perhaps there is anybody out there who can help me with this
problem...

best regards

Markus

There is a BIOS flash for that, just because its new to you does not mean
its just out of the factory been on a boat on the docks 3-4 months.
Been there done that!
I now have a new BIOS revision 1006.

Yes, this is the Version that I downloaded at the asus-site and is instelled
on my system. It is the latest official release for that board, not the
Beta. Perhaps ist has something to do with my harddrive. The Problem is that
I haven´t got another one to check if the board works corectly...
