problems with address bar search in IE6

For some reason if I try to do a search in the address bar of IE6, I get a
page not found error. For example, I did a search for polar bears, and got
a page not found, as well as the following was displayed in the address bar:
http:///? polar bears

Any ideas how to restore the address bar search function? I have tried to
do it using the search button, then customize, but it still happens.
