Problems with ABIT NF7 MB

D

David ~

I'm replacing an old ASUS board with an ABIT NF7-S2G. The old PC was
running fine except every time I shut down the BIOS settings were lost so I
decided to replace it.

It's pretty much a bare bone system with the following:

AMD XP 2400 processor
3 sticks of Crucial PC2100 266, 256MB.
An Enermax(?) Whisper quiet 350V PSU
A 300MHz ASUS V9180 AGP video card based on the Nvidia NV17 (GF4 MX440-8x)
A Yamaha CDRW Drive
A NEC LCD monitor

The problems;

When I boot I get nothing on the monitor except a brief message saying no
signal is present. The led on MS Optical mouse never lights up, much less
even flicker. I've plugged it directly into various USB ports, and I've
also plugged it into a PS2 port with an USB/PS2 adapter. The lights on the
USB keyboard will briefly come on during the first few seconds after
powering up then nothing, I've also tried a "standard" PS2 which doesn't
even flicker during the 1st few seconds.

The HD's are active and the CD drive seeks a boot CD that is in the drive.

I've went through all 3 steps of troubleshooting to clear the CMOS. I also
checked the battery and it's at 3.03v.

Both status indicators on the MB are on, one is red and the other green. The
manual doesn't specify if red is bad or normal.

The manual does state that the MB does NOT support 3.3v AGP cards. I've
searched the ASUS site as well as my documentation and I have no idea if
this card is .08v, 1.5v or 3.3v cards. Could this be a problem? Maybe I
should be booting up with a VGA card to start with? Not that I have one
handy, but I would assume an AGP should be recognized with todays
technology...

I've checked & double checked the *few* jumper settings on the MB and I see
nothing wrong.

Any idea's? The only thing I can think of is that the BIOS is set to halt
on all errors, and the AGP is the problem?

Thanks,

David...

You could have just replaced the battery...

So are you getting to the boot phase, or is it not even completing POST?

You have probably shorted the motherboard to the case with a misplaced
standoff, assuming it's not even reaching POST...
The HD's are active and the CD drive seeks a boot CD that is in the drive.

So it's completing the POST and getting to the message 'searching for
boot record' or some such when it tries the cd drive?

If it's an 8x compatible card, and it seems it is, it shouldn't be a
problem.
Maybe I
should be booting up with a VGA card to start with?

When PRECISELY is the boot process failing? Before or during POST? After
post when it tries to boot from a cd drive? After POST when it tries to
boot from the hard drive?

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

I did, several months ago... the old one was at 3.V and the new one at 3.3V

Not even completing the POST, at least not that I can tell. After the
initial message the screen goes blank. And I get no beeps from the speaker,
which I know was/is working.

I guess that's possible, but I'm usually pretty good about these things.

No, see above...

boot from the hard drive?

Within 3-4 seconds the screen goes blank so I really can't tell

Thanks,

David...
