Problems using a network adapter.

This is the first time I've attempted to install any sort of network. Anyway, I've installed a Davicom 9102 network adapter on one of the 2 computers I want to network (the other having an inbuilt adapter), connected both through a crossover cable and ran the setup wizard on both computers. The problem is the other computer doesn't show up as part of network places, and the adapter doesn't seem to be sending or receiving packets. Looking at the connection properties shows the ip address and subnet mask are "<unavailable>" along with everything else, and when I select the repair option it says that TCP/IP hasn't been installed. (although the checkbox in the connection properties is checked). So, how can I fix this?

I apologise for the newbie question, but I really have no idea what to do next.

A simple thing is to first identify if the adapter is 'connected'

Do this by lloking at the NIC, just near the plug. If the cable is plugged in correctly and there is a proper signal, one would expect to see a green LED illuminated. If it is off, then you may have a cable problem or a faulty NIC

Make sure you follow the Network Wizard to the letter for a direct cable connection, or else both PCs will assign the same IP address to their own NIC. Of course the newtwork can't funtion in this manner.

First of all, try to get a hub instead of cross cable.
