problems updating XP

can any one advise what to do with my probelm
i have xp sp2 windows and set my updates to auto , but recently the updates
will advise me as they are released and will start to down load but will not
install...i also tried to do this manually ......
but same thing everytime latley...get updates , downloads and nothing happens
what would you do in this suitation?
