problems since my windows update

Yesterday, I installed some windowns updates (webroot certificate, daylight
savings time issues, etc). Ever since that update, I can not access the
internet as Explorer does seem to work (connectivity shows fine and other pcs
in the house connect fine). McAfee Anti Virus software is disabled now and
my pc will not shut down properly. I get a window when I attempt to close
referring to "AXWIN," but the computer never shuts down.

With no internet access, is there anything I can do without re-installing
windows? Also, any thoughts what could cause this reaction after my
updates...besides a virus?

Now I see from other posts, that there seems to be a Microsoft problem with
the 1/29/07 root certificate update.

Is this being addressed by Microsoft?

I had the same problem with my one year old computer after downloading the
update. My computer acted like it was slowly dying. I had no sound,
couldn't launch IE7, Norton AV freaked out, couldn't access anything in the
Control Panel, computer wouldn't shut down and Media Player wouldn't play
correctly. I tried defragging and chkdsk to no avail. I tried "repairing"
XP from the CD and the problems didn't go away. I was, however, still able
to surf the web and check email with Netscape and Thunderbird. I thought
the area of my HD that holds the windows directory was going south. I have
reformatted and re-installed XP and so far so good.

thanks
