Problems Since Installing New Windows Updater Software

I have my computer set to receive notification of critical Windows updates,
but I choose NOT to let the updates happen automatically. Yesterday I got the
notification for a critical update. When I went to install the update,
Microsoft determined that I needed to upgrade my update installer software,
which I did.

The critical update proceded normally, but I am experiencing problems with
other things. Non-critical updates either fail or are reported as having
failed, but have actually installed.

The most troublesome problem is with other software. Since the "upgrade" my
Symantec Live-Update no longer works correctly. I receive an error message
about not having enough virtual memory and that Windows will automatically
make the necessary changes. Then everything appears to continue correctly,
but I find that the Symantec Anti-Virus and Firewall components have NOT been
updated.

For security reasons I obviously need to fix this. Hopefully someone knows
the solution.

If there is no readily available "fix" for this I need to know how the
remove or disable Microsoft's updater software so I can update my anti-virus
and firewall software. Also, I'd like to know if there's a way to manually
download and install Windows updates so I can avoid using the updater
completely.

Thank you for your assistance.
